How Latinos give directions

*I wanted to go for a run so I asked my Colombian mom for a good route*

'Exit out of the back gate on Las Vegas and run towards el Carrefur (a grocery store). Keep going straight, straight, straight until you see some car dealerships and a McDonalds. Then you go up, up, up until you get to el Poblado and you do a little loop until you arrive back at the house...it's a very nice walk.'

Now, there are multiple problems with these directions from my perspective:

1. There are about 6 car dealerships along Las Vegas. Thank God there's only one Mc Donalds.
2. For some reason, Colombians do not like to use 'left' or 'right' when giving directions. Where exactly am I going up, up, up.
3. Using a word multiple times like 'straight, straight, straight' or 'up, up, up' does not indicate the actual distance I am supposed to travel. Is that 1/2 mile? 1/4 mile? What? Perhaps people in Medellin substitute up and down for left and right because they live in the mountains and you're either subiendo (going up) or bajando (going down).
4. Finally, there are not many street signs along the road so I never know when I've arrived to the right street to go up, up or straight, straight.

ugh.
