Workshop ends...weekend begins!

My wake up call was for 7 am and I woke up on my own at about 6:10 am for no good reason. The workshop was focused on “the learning” from the week and what kinds of topics or themes the group wanted to work on throughout the year. These themes were things that were all relevant to their projects, could be researched and possibly used to create a tool or publication for the field.

We got out early, but I spent almost 2 hours going through the hotel bill…fun!

Once everything was squared away with the hotel Melissa and I hopped into a cab and rode to the wharf so we could go to Samal Island to a resort called Pearl Farm. It started off with an exciting boat ride! I really had no idea what to expect, but it was 10 of us on a motor boat, going what seemed like 50 miles an hour, through choppy water. After the initial shock of having my ass bang into the wooden bench on the boat (I say initial because that was pretty much happening the entire ride), it was really fun! Kind of like an amusement park ride with better scenery!

We arrived to Pearl Farm and words cannot describe how amazed I am!? Not only is the price right, but the resort is gorgeous. If it didn’t take 24 hours to get to the Philippines from DC this would be the perfect place to just chill out. Part of the reason I think it’s so cheap is because foreigners don’t want to come to the island of Mindanao; amongst all the Filipino’s I talked to, they all recommended Pearl Farm, but I would bet that if they started getting more foreign tourists the prices and uniqueness of the establishment would drastically change.

Melissa and I are staying in a cute little bungalow. When we arrived, we spent two hours on the beach in the clear water and watched the sunset. It would have been very romantic if I hadn’t been with my boss! We even were serenaded during dinner! I guess the hotel hires local musicians to play during dinner and at the bar. So Melissa and I sat down for dinner and 3 Filipino men came up and started singing and playing “Until there was you” from the Music Man and some song about “sweet kisses” which almost made me spit out my water when they began singing…it would have been cheesy either way, but I’m with my supervisor! WTH!?

We then were invited to listen to a girl performing at the bar that night. We had road on the boat with her on the way to the island so she asked us to come see her. She was the cutest little Filipino person I have ever seen and she was very gifted. She played her guitar and sang, mostly American songs like “I shot the sheriff,” “I was meant for you” by Jewel, “Change the world” by Eric Clapton…etc…

I have a big day ahead of me tomorrow hopefully filled with snorkeling or island hopping!!!
