Things French People like: Digest #2, Dogs

I thought that only Americans were ridiculous about their pets, but I think the French are more so. In fact, I wonder if our trend of putting dogs in trendy Coach bags and having them wear cute clothes and collars originated here.
Not only does it feel like a quarter of the population in Nice is walking a dog at any giving time, but dogs can go in most public places with their owners. I see dogs in the grocery store, the mall, and on the bus. Signs will be present to indicate an area in which dogs are prohibited.

Unfortunately, this would lead me to assume that people in Nice also place their dogs as a priority before both the cleanliness, the physical beauty of their own city, and the cost of water. Because there isn't a lot of grassy areas in the city and people don't carry around plastic bags to pick up their dog's crap, you are constantly side-stepping and hopping over dog shit on the sidewalk. It's pretty gross. Most businesses will rinse off their sidewalk early in the morning...but water's expensive here in Europe.
The most popular dog seems to be the Yorkie, although I would say that in general people choose smaller to medium sized dogs that are easily transportable.
